Karajan Berlin Philharmonic

Philharmonic Bass section?
All the time in the Berlin Philharmonic when Karajan used to conduct and even today I don't understand something. The bass section, when playing an important fast paced section or just playing in general, the bounce their bows on the string a lot. I've tried to play it like them, and I cannot. not because i'm not as good as them but i don't obtain the same sound unless I push my bow into the string or play with a mild bounce. But even then it doesn't have a full sound like thiers do. I have a video, just skip to 22:18 to see what i mean.
it only happens in a split second but it looks awesome and I play the german bow so I would like to know why I cannot do this. Thanks

They are still really digging in and drawing hair across those strings, it does all happen quickly. The bounce is to get the weight and bite for that short-stroke bowing. You may be thinking of them as two things apart. The nature of the vibrating string to push away the bow must be part of the release, the end reaction of the initial 'bounce' attack. (They are not working as hard as you seem to think.)
There is so many wrong suggestions for slow practice on Y/A I will not go there. Certainly, the combination of motions As One is something you need to 'find' in your physical playing. This can be done more slowly, but I strongly remind you the feel of things at tempo must be known (and felt) as a gesture and within that tempo, at which point any slower practice is useless.
This orchestra, even today, is renowned for their sections playing and sounding as a homogeneous section. Some of what you are hearing is (within rhythmic precision) an extremely slight variance of rhythm and micro agogics which results in the composite sound of several players in 'unison.'
So much, too, has to do with the acoustics of the orchestra's home hall. We don't really hear the separation, do we? We hear articulation, and the decay / travel time fills in the gap where they are not in contact with the string. In a brighter hall, with a briefer decay rate, those players might not need to separate those bowings, or bounce, as much as we see in the clip.
best regards.
