This was no older than the 80s I'd guess, in Fogelberg style but apparently not him. It's a story -- a guy on his horse in the woods in the high country trying to find his way back to his (cabin?) as the snow becomes heavier, and he finally lets the horse take the lead. He thinks he can smell the smoke of the fireplace but can't see anything, by the end, and it doesn't sound like he gets home.
The chorus as I recall was pretty much just "make it home." And maybe something about the warm fire.
The singer was male and maybe this was an Indie release?
