Im a budding singer/songwriter with a my debut album recorded. What do I do next?
Iv'e been writing and recording songs on and off for 5 years now. I have a repertoire of around 6 or 7 good strong songs which I have a set date to go into a recording studio and record next month (April 2011)
After these sessions, I will want to get my music out there. In respect to live shows, so far I have only turned up to buskers nights and been given the opportunity to play 2 or 3 songs to a pub full of drunk people, not listening.
what do I do next? how can I fund album printing? how do I distribute my music? How do I get THE RIGHT gigs?
Although people mean well,these answers are wrong.
If you are serious about your music and singing ability then you need to go beyond you tube.
Make a 3 song demo CD and put your best song first. Make sure you have copyrights before sending your material.
I'm just going to copy & paste my advoice because I get so many questions from other singer/songwriters.
I have 20 years experience in the music business so this is the correct way to promote yourself.
What you needs to do is get your music published. Copyright everything first.
If you can generate cash by doing benefit shows and getting donations you could promote your own CD on local radio stations
and send them to other stations worldwide. Doing open mic night shows is a great way to get noticed by producers,managers,
talent scouts,publishers and other artists.
I can reccommend a few tools for you to look over if you're interested.
Before buying any of these try looking at the local library first to save money.
1. A book titled MUSIC,MONEY,and SUCCESS is a valuable tool. It's an inside guide to the music industry. very valuable
info in it.
2. Even though this is a Nashville based book....The NASHVILLE REDBOOK is a great sourse of info on the complete
and unparalled source directory for Nashvilles music and entertainment industry. Remember,Nashville is NOT JUST
country music! Mutt Lang produces AC/DC as well as Shania Twain. Publishers there don't just want country...
they want anything and everything that makes them money!
3. Every year a book titled SONG WRITER'S MARKET is put out to let you know where to market your songs.
It includes the leading guide on where & how to market your music to record companies & producers,music publishers,
managers,advertising and audiovisual agencies. It tells you the types of music currently being sought,submission
guidelines & songwriting needs,complete contact information including addresses,phone numbers,websites and e-mail.
Plus articles n tips from successful music industry professionals.
4. A book called HOW TO PITCH AND PROMOTE YOUR SONGS This is a step by step guide to: being your own
publisher,targeting the right markets,building your own catalog,and creating a demo package. This is a must have book.
5. A little book called THE ESSENTIAL SONGWRITERS CONTRACT HANDBOOK Self explanatory. Songwriters and bands
need this so they doesn't get ripped off by a contract.
6. Last but not least ,a book called ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE MUSIC BUSINESS
This a required reading for anyone planning or enduring a career in the biz
Also don't be afraid to upload videos on you tube of your talents,whether it's guitar playing,singing,a complete band etc.
And not just you tube but any material sharing (safe) website. Just be sure if you are doing your own material
that you copyright it first either with The National Library Of Congress or by poorman copyright.
Make a 3 song DEMO of your best songs. Get permission from publishing companies and recording companies before sending your material. NEVER send unsolicited material.
