Greetings to the Classical Music community!
When many people think of "good" Bach performances, they think of conductors such as Gardiner, etc. However, since I have perfect pitch, his performances, which are played in historical pitch (A=420something Hz) drive me crazy.
I then found German conductor and organist Karl Richter, and I absolutely love his modern interpretation of Bach!
Do I have any other fans of Karl Richter out there!?!
A formidable, phenomenal interpreter of Bach’s orchestral and organ works.
Outstanding in the Brandenburgische, Mass in B min and the two passions. The usage of ancient instruments by the Bach Kammerorchester gave the first real look-and-feel rendition of how it sounded in Bach’s time. He was born in 1926 and died in 1981 of a heart attack, probably connected to his being a hard smoker. In 1949 he was already the chief organist of St. Thomas in Leipzig, the same where Bach had been musical director. Since 1951, Muenchen became his headquarter.
What a like most is his tempo: it always leaves the impression of being the right one.
