Is it true that when in college we gotta have an awesome testimonial done up? So we gotta join clubs, be part of the student council, join the editorial board, do lotsa comunity service work, be known/close to the dean and so on? Is it okay/safe to just get gd grades? Just score A's for the main exams... ? I honestly love the stuff and all (was VERY active in high school) but well, I did crap in my exams then (fine, i over exagerate but them results werent gd) so I thought I shld like REALLY FULLY concentrate on my studies this time..but everyone around me's joining everything and I just know it'll take time cause I tend to um..be very part of things if you get what I mean...
I want to get into a gd Uni for my degree then do my PhD or Psy.D for clinical psychology so yeaaaa... Will it screw my chances if Im not like.. joining stuff?
For graduate programs, they usually do want to see that you did more than just go to class and go home. After all, almost anyone can get good grades if they do nothing else in their lives. There is another danger to not getting involved, which is that you will have a lot of extra time, which theoretically COULD be spent studying, but historically, most students find other things, like drinking a lot or working too many hours, to fill.
However, I would suggest the following. For your first year, focus on your studies. Get your grades off to a really good start. If there is something like a Psychology Students Association at your school, you might want to join that, because it will give you inside information about how to do well in your classes and show your professors that you care about the field (don't forget that you will need recommendations from them later on). Otherwise, steer clear of time-consumers like Greek organizations, sports clubs, etc. I have nothing against these things, but they do take a lot of time away from studying.
Second year, if you did well your first year, you can pick up the pace a little. Look toward activities which will help you later on. A volunteer organization, working with a type of people with whom you haven't had previous experience, might be good. If there are opportunities for student research, look into that.
Third year is often a year when people will study abroad for a semester, and if you have that opportunity, I would highly recommend it. If not, look into either research or competitions in your field which might distinguish you in some way, or take a leadership position with one of the other groups you joined earlier.
Senior year, especially if you have been a great student, the opportunities should be presenting themselves, and you should be doing a lot more than just getting through classes with good grades. Not only will it look better to grad schools, but you would be having a lot more fun.
