Name suggestion for a character?
Or any good websites that has a list of baby names? I'm having trouble finding a good name for a character - I quite liked Ruth cause I thought it sounded tomboyish but its too biblical. Here's a short character description:
My character is female, is around the age 15-17 and is Scottish. She recently moved to Musselburgh (a city near Edinburgh) but lived in the highlands most of her life. Her mother and little sister died (murdered) when she was young - Why this happened is a plot point in my story. She misses her family terribly (of course). She lives with her father and moved to Musselburgh to live near her Gran. She plays the guitar and dreams of being a musician but get severe stage fright. She has a immature/childish sense of humour. She's gay and is very awkward when expressing love as she has had no experience in this area.
Well that's a very brief description on my character - What do you think would be a good name?
There are quite a wide range of names that you would find fit your requirements fairly accurately, though I will only list a few that I can think of immediately. I will also try ,to the best of my ability, to list unbiased pros and cons, though I may still express a few recommendations and/or preferables:
Firstly there would be 'Max'. It is a tomboyish name that could be lengthened to 'Maxine', 'Maximum', 'Maximillian', or just be a full name unto itself. Though it may be rather a bold name for a shy and timid girl and usually tends to express a more aggressive, intimidating female.
Next would be 'Sam', short for 'Samantha' which by itself can be changed to a more girlish choice of 'Sammy' or 'Sammie'. It is rather more suited to a 'rough and tumble' type of girl, so maybe not so suitable, no?
Another would be 'Alex', short for 'Alexandra' or if you prefer 'Alexa'. It is a tom-boyish name that seems to hold a sort of eloquence or grace, yet still manages to sound rather, as more wealthy people tend to say, 'common'. I think this may be one of the best choices for you.
So far I have listed quite a few more generalised a name, so below I will proceed to list names with a more unique quality:
The first of my more uncommon names would be 'Carter'. Unfortunately this name is short and subsequently does not have the ability to be lengthened into a name used today, though you are more than welcome to try if you feel a need to do so. It has the bonus of sounding girlish yet also invoking thoughts of the famous archaeologist Howard Carter and therefore giving it that boyish tinge you have put forth the impression of wanting. Also this name, in my opinion, seems to suite your character almost to perfection.
The next name I am putting forward is 'Dru', also spelled as 'Drue' or Drew'. It is very neutral a name and I don't believe it is biblical in anyway, though you are free to check if you feel it nesscessary to do so. It is a unisex name and I think it would be utterly flawless for the former 'Ruth'. I know I have expressed this comment for two of my five previously noted names but I impress more upon this particular name which also happens to be one of my favourites.
The last name I will suggest in this post would be, though not the absolute best, 'Victoria'. This name can be shortened into 'Tori', 'Vic', 'Vickie' and quite a few other versions of which I do not care to mention at the moment. This is a Victorian sounding name, after all it was the name of the queen in those times, and lets off a vibe of slight awkwardness when in it's full form and a more relaxed and playful aura when shortened, specifically for the short-handed 'Tori'. Also I find the shorter version 'Vicky' to be quite appropriate for an Irish name, though I may be incorrect.
Those are all the names I can think of on such short notice, along with the pros and cons. I hope you find them helpful.
Sincerely,
The Blood-Stained Angel of Vengeance
