Why was Carol Channing not in the movie version of Hello Dolly?

Carol Channing rarely worked in movies and was considered a stage performer. It wasn't the first time she did not do the movie version of a musical she made popular, namely "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". As with that film, Hollywood chose a "hot property". Barbra Streisand won an Oscar for Best Actress in "Funny Girl", so she would seem obvious to star in another big musical: "Hello, Dolly!" (1969)~the year after her won for her first film role. After all, Barbra made Oscar history when she tied vote for vote with Katharine Hepburn for "The Lion in Winter" (1968)!
Unfortunately, the cost of the film was enormous, and the box-office take was disappointing. The days of the musicals had nearly passed because other "surefire hits" also were bombing, such as "Star!" (1968), starring Julie Andrews.
The studio merely hoped to have a stronger musical with a young, popular actress/singer in the lead: Barbra Streisand. I have a feeling that Carol Channing, who played a small role in "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (1967), simply didn't have what it takes on the "silver screen". Broadway doesn't always translate to movies. Mary Martin didn't get the lead in "South Pacific" that she had wowed them with; they took a chance with Mitzi Gaynor instead. It's actually rather surprising if members of the Broadway cast make it into a film.
