What is too much description in a story?
I always hear that in stories that too much outfit/physical description is a character trait of Mary Sues. How can you tell when it is too much, or when it is just being descriptive?
Too much description is also called purple prose. You can tell it's too much when it doesn't help you understand the story more. It actually gets in the way of the reading, because the writer stops to drool over his/her own character and forces you to read it all.
And example of too much outfit or physical description is like:
"Sally walked up to Michael in her shiny black pumps. Her long red braided hair swung around her shoulders and contrasted with the frilly, sheer green blouse that she was wearing. She purposely let her lacy black bra be transparent under her sexy top. Her butt looked good in the tight dark jeans that she was wearing. The wooden and metal bracelets on her hands jangled as she walked, and the giant cocktail rings on her fingers glinted in the sunlight. Her giant chandelier earrings swayed with the rhythm of her body and perfectly complemented her outfit. She was just so beautiful that Michael couldn't stop staring at her."
