Should we pass Hate Speech Laws such as Canada and England have?
Well, well, if it isn't discredit the opposition time - by using a miscreant as a battering ram against those who espouse political views deemed uncongenial. One mentally unstable criminal, Michael Enright, stabs a Muslim cab driver, and somehow all of us who have opposed the mega mosque project near the Ground Zero site are to blame. Hopefully, the cab driver will heal well from his nearly lethal wounds (which required, if what I have read about them is any guide, 45 stitches), and as it turns out Enright himself actually has worked for a group supporting the mega mosque project near Ground Zero - see my source below.
At this time I find myself recalling similar tactics used by the American "left" in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing - and all of it seems to be based on a theory of causation that is very selectively applied, in order to suit political goals that the "left" finds congenial. (I don't believe that similar causation theory would be used against politicians who rail against corporations if some psychopathic goon were to stab a corporate executive, just to use one hypothetical example.) I note that the question is aimed against talk radio in general - but it seems as though the hotly argued debate over the mega mosque project in particular is the argument that the "left" wants to squelch with reference to this particular case.
If America passes "hate speech" laws like Canada and England, we can say goodbye to the First Amendment, because "hate" in practice can mean just about anything from actual threats to mere remarks that offend certain activists that like to claim that they speak for a particular group as a whole. With such a range of speech classified as "hate," the word "hate" effectively winds up having no coherent definition against which charges can be evaluated. That is also why I am opposed to the concept of "hate crimes" - the crimes so designated are better prosecuted under existing laws against assault, threats, arson, vandalism, murder, etc. Hence, Michael Enright would be prosecuted under existing law against assault (and given the clarity of the evidence, I see no reason to believe that he would not be convicted of it).
