Why Did Capitol Wait Till 'Rubber Soul' To Release The Beatle's Studio Albums?
when the rubber soul album was release capitol started releasing the beatles studio albums such as / rubber soul,revolver,sgt peppers, and the white album. how come please please me,with the beatles,hard days night,beatles for sale,help! and abbey road weren't released in america aswell as being published by capitol. im not talking about the movie soundtracks either or for example Meet the beatles or beatles something new, i mean their legit studio album being released in america in the 60's
In the 1960's recording artists did not have the control over their product like they do today. Capitol believed that they knew the American market better than the Beatles or their parent company EMI did. In the UK, albums had an average of 14 tracks, whereas in the States you could do 12 or less. Also Capitol was big on cramming singles onto albums to increase sales. In the UK, very few Beatles albums actually included their hit singles.
So Capitol would cut an album in half, add some singles and have two records to market and sell in place of one. Even "Rubber Soul" is missing some tracks on the US version, and includes some that were on the UK "Help!" album.
It wasn't until "Sgt. Pepper" that the Beatles had enough clout to force Capitol to stop screwing around with their albums. Except for the "Hey Jude" album (which was not released in the UK), all following US albums matched their UK counterparts.
In the late 1980's, all the bastard American albums ("Meet the Beatles", "Something New", etc.) were deleted and replaced with the British versions. This was done mainly so the US CDs that were just coming out would match the UK ones. Also all the post-1970 Capitol collections ("Love Songs", "Live at the Hollywood Bowl", "Rock & Roll Music", "Reel Music", etc.) were deleted as well, and never released on CD. The red & blue greatest hits packages were released world-wide on vinyl, so they eventually came out on CD as well.
