James Horner's music was usually cheerful, family-like, and patriotic like John Williams and Bruce Broughton.
When the film TROY was made, it had some dark, intense, middle-eastern like tone with middle-eastern chorus in the background. John Debney's was also cheerful as well, when END OF DAYS and THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST was made, it was dark, deep, middle-eastern, intense, and had chorus in the background to it. Film composer music can have distinctive music tones but can change a bit once in a while into a certain rhythm. Do you think that if Mark Isham made some war and / or battle film in the middle east or centuries ago, that it would have dark, middle-eastern, intense, jungle-like, chorus like rhythm music like films such as THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, GLADIATOR, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, THE CROW, etc.?
As far as I can tell, Isham stopped composing music over a decade ago (with the minor exception of the theme music for television's Chicago Hope.)
First, I disagree with your assessment of James Horner's music being cheerful and patriotic. Surely he's up to the task of some cheery music, but his themes in A Beautiful Mind are complex, repetitive, almost like Philip Glass.
Jonn WIlliams music has had a distinctly sad feeling in his "A.I." and very Jewish in his "Schindler's List"
Anyway, yes, if Horner was hired to set music behind a middle-eastern setting, Im sure he's fully capable of making music that would sound territorial to his audience.
