Eddie Van Halen's technique was revolutionary... Van Halen wasn't. For every supposedly innovative guitar piece like Eruption or Spanish Fly there were 10 c*ck rock tracks devoid of any lyrical substance. He wasn't a wanker, but he sure as hell didn't balance out his music either. I seriously believe that anyone who puts EVH in their top 10 innovative guitarists list has most likely never heard of Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force debut or Mike Varney's Shrapnel Records label... You know, the stuff that actually advanced neo-classical metal forward. Some of the stuff on there makes Eruption look like Blitzkrieg Bop anyway.
****That previous paragraph is probably gonna offend some people, but I'd like to point out the obvious and say that I wasn't there during Van Halen's heyday, so I probably don't know jack about how much he really influenced the industry. My opinion is based on the quality of the music when compared to other guitarists (especially from the 80s), not the influence.
Yes and no... Ace Frehley was win, and Kiss has a fair amount of good songs...
