What is the best way to repair tears in fur coats yourself? These are small tears. All answers welcome.?
I have inherited several nice mink coats and stoles and I want to repair them myself. They have tears usually at a seam or the shoulder. Is sewing the best way? Glue seems so permanent and if I make a mistake it may be uncorrectable. Are there "best" tools to use? I've never done this before and I know that many people work with crafts, leather and fur and may be able to advise me. Please don't tell me to take it to a furrier, I already know I can do that!
All advice will be welcomed.
As the other person suggested, use small stitches when sewing fur. Sew from the underside, which means you'll have to find a way to get around the lining of the coat. Some people will use invisible thread, which is much stronger than cotton thread. Tie off securely. Do not pull tight, as stitches can tear through skin. Call your local historical society and see if they know someone who restores old furs. They might be able to give you better tips than you can get here. Also, check with your local library for books on this subject. Talk with your librarian and see if they can help you find more resources. <*)))><
